Kinetic roughening transition and missing regime transition of melt crystallized polybutene-1 tetragonal

Motoi YAMASHITA

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 2,   Pages 125-134 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0001-3

Abstract: The morphology and lateral growth rate of polybutene-1 ( -PB1) have been investigated for crystallization from the melt over a wide range of crystallization temperatures from 50 to 110°C. The morphology of -PB1 crystals is a rounded shape at crystallization temperatures lower than 85°C, while lamellar single crystals possess faceted morphology at higher crystallization temperatures. The kinetic roughening transition occurs around 85°C. The nucleation and growth mechanism for crystallization does not work below 85°C, since the growth face is rough. However, the growth rate shows the supercooling dependence derived from the nucleation and growth mechanism. The nucleation theory seems still to work even for rough surface growth. Possible mechanisms for the crystal growth of this polymer are discussed.

Water Saving Irrigation for Rice and Its Effect on Environment

Mao Zhi

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 7,   Pages 8-16

Abstract:

Rice is one of the most important food crops contributing about 40% of the total food grain production in China. Out of about 110 million hectares of area sown food crops, 28% is covered by rice. Since 1980s, the shortage of water resources has become an important problem for agricultural production in rice planing areas and many water saving regimes for rice have been tested, advanced, applied and spread in different regions of China. In this paper, based on the results of experiment and the experience of spread of these new irrigation regimes, the following four main kinds of water saving irrigation regimes in China have been classified viz. (1) combining shallow water depth with “wetting” and “dry” (SWD), (2) alternate wetting and drying (AWD) ,(3) semi-dry cultivation (SDC) and (4) rainwater storage (RS). The standards of field water control and potential of saving water, increasing rice yield and water productivity of these regimes are introduced and explained. The selection and attention points of application for the four regimes are presented and the causes of sustainable saving water and increase in water productivity and the environmental impacts by adopting these regimes are analyzed and discussed.

Study of Fire Smoke Flow Characteristics of Horizontal Tunnel Using Longitudinal Ventilation

Lu Ping,Cong Beihua,Liao Guangxuan,Fan Weicheng,Li Peide

Strategic Study of CAE 2004, Volume 6, Issue 10,   Pages 59-64

Abstract:

The management of subway tunnel fire smoke is an important component in city public safety. In this paper, on the basis of theoretical analysis of the main factors affecting fire smoke flow in a subway tunnel, the ventilation and exhaust system were considered as a whole and the effects of buoyancy and thermal resistance were introduced. Further, a mathematical model was established to express the relationships between the critical environments, critical velocities, air speeds, smoke speeds and fire intensities. The results can provide instructions for tunnel smoke managements and emergency handling.

Option-like properties in the distribution of hedge fund returns

Katharina DENK, Ben DJERROUD, Luis SECO, Mohammad SHAKOURIFAR, Rudi ZAGST

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2020, Volume 7, Issue 2,   Pages 275-286 doi: 10.1007/s42524-020-0095-3

Abstract: Hedge funds have recently become popular because of their low correlation with traditional investments and their ability to generate positive returns with a relatively low volatility. However, a close look at those high-performing hedge funds raises the questions on whether their performance is truly superior and whether the high management fees are justified. Incurring no alpha costs, passive hedge fund replication strategies raise the question on whether they can similarly perform by improving efficiency at reduced costs. Therefore, this study investigates two different model approaches for the equity long/short strategy, where weighted segmented linear regression models are employed and combined with two-state Markov switching models. The main finding proves a short put option structure, i.e., short equity market volatility, with the put structure present in all market states. We obtain an evidence that the hedge fund managers decrease their short-volatility profile during turbulent markets.
